Few groups have ever enjoyed the level of overnight success that swept Wham! away in the 1980s when they sold 30million records between 1982 and 1986 as they capitalised on the growth of MTV to become amongst the most famous bands in the world. A run of massive hit singles kept them on the front pages not just of the pop magazines but the newspapers too as George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley became two of the best known faces in the world as ‘Club Tropicana’, ‘Wake Mr Up Before You Go-Go’ and ‘Freedom’ cemented their position at the top of the tree. Regulars on TV all around the world, they became the first western pop group to perform in China and when they finally decided to call time on Wham!, their final concert, ‘The Farewell’ filled Wembley Stadium.
