“Maximum r’n’b” was the calling card of The Who as they came to prominence in the midst of the 1960s British Invasion, following on in the wake of The Beatles and The Stones. Fronted by their charismatic singer Roger Daltrey, it was guitarist Pete Towshend who was the motive force behind the group as its main songwriter and the wellspring of not just hit singles like ‘Substitute’ and ‘My Generation’, but concept albums such as ‘Tommy’ and ‘Quadrophenia’ which also made it to the cinema screen. With the supremely talented John Entwistle on bass and Keith ‘Moon the Loon’ on drums and general chaos, The Who were a combustible quartet, as likely to launch into one another as they were to trash their equipment on stage, a move which became a Who signature. Backstage Pass features photographs from across their career, including the post-Moon days when Kenney Jones replaced him. The kids are alright.
